Full of His Unfailing Love

Here I am again, with my ring of verses. I carry them with me and watch them grow a bit more every season. Let me tell you, my stack of index cards scribbled with verses has grown quite a bit this year! This growing stack is like the wall we had in the kitchen, covered in those dated lines as I grew. Some years challenge us more than others to grow in our faith and to learn what trusting the Lord looks like.

The whole of Psalm 33 is a beautiful and encouraging call to worship. (Please go read it!) But the verse I want to share today is especially comforting to me when I need to reset my perspective - when the world feels like it’s imploding, when everything is falling apart, when goodness itself feels threatened, and when I find myself anxious about the future that lies ahead for my son.

“For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.” Psalm 33:4-5

Four statements. Four truths to which I can anchor. Four beautiful reminders of who it is we trust.
1. For the word of the Lord is right and true
Unlike the countless gods of the ancient world and the idols in my own life, the God I serve does not use tricks and deceptions to get his way. He doesn’t have to! I can remember the countless times that His words have comforted, convicted, and guided me and my loved ones. He tells the truth, and His Word has never led me astray. In an ever-changing world, the Lord’s words can be depended on.

2. He is faithful in all He does
Our God keeps his promises. He doesn’t abandon people, even when they abandon him.  When I read through the Bible, I can see that it’s true. When I look through my own life, I see that it’s true! My God keeps His promises, and I am so grateful for His faithfulness!

3. The Lord loves righteousness and justice
I think that everyone who has suffered and seen suffering must ask why God allows pain to exist. Sometimes I think the answers are clear and sometimes they feel muddy. But whether or not God answers my “Why?”, I can trust that His heart breaks with my own. The Lord loves righteousness. The Lord loves justice, goodness, and peace. I remember all the stories in the Bible where God has toppled the corrupt and rescued the oppressed. I also think of how He has rescued me and convicted me when I needed it! I’ve seen and experienced His love of righteousness and justice, and how He fights for them in every life, every day.

4. The earth is full of His unfailing love
Let me say this again, the earth is FULL of His unfailing love! Every time I read this, my mind fills with examples. I think of all the people I know who show God’s love to others. I wouldn’t even be able to list them all here! I think of all the times that God has provided for my family through others. I think of mission organizations, charities, foster parents, volunteers, and all the people who show love through simple acts of prayer, meals, cards, and company. Pretty soon, my mind is filled to the brim with examples of God’s love covering the earth. Join me in listing examples of God’s love in your world, big and small, and you’ll have pages and pages that show His love filling the earth.

Within a few minutes of reading this verse, I am strengthened and encouraged. It reminds me that, while we do live in a broken world, we also live in a world that is made by, sustained by, and loved by a good and faithful God! I can trust that.

Have a Terrific Tuesday,
Naomi :-)

Naomi,
I'm glad that I still receive these emails from First Pres even though I moved up to Ponderay and I am happy that I took time to read this. What an encouraging verse and message.

These words of encouragement are timely with tensions rising in a divisive election cycle. But they are equally timely in ALL of living. Thanks for your inspiring reflections on a beautiful passage.

Naomi,
Thank you.
The earth IS full of His goodness, faithfulness and love. All these are visible in the awesomeness of nature (His first Bible ), the genuine and precious love given by children, and in sisters ( and brothers) with the heart, mind and soul such as yours Naomi.
You are included in my ‘goodness’ list.
Peace, Yvette
