Despite successfully keeping the pandemic from our doors since March, in July things took a turn. Over the past month, we have had 7 caregivers, our youth guide, 2 young adults from our transition home, and 3 children from our residential home test positive for COVID-19.
Thankfully, only one staff member has had significant symptoms, and she is nearly fully recovered. None of our children have experienced more than low-grade fever and sore throats, and as we write this, all are asymptomatic.
We are currently taking steps to lock down the home for the next 28 days. We have been preparing for this scenario for months and have the much-needed PPE and health care equipment already purchased and in place. We have created an isolation ward and hired nursing staff to monitor the children who have tested positive. Ten of our highest risk children have been moved to our transition home (empty because our young adults are all helping with caregiving) to ensure there is no possible contact with those who are in the process of recuperation.
Our caregivers and young adults who are able to work have entered into a strict quarantine, and for the next month will be living permanently in our homes to contain the outbreak. Our goal is that by the end of this period, NCV will be coronavirus-free!
We are so grateful for your sponsorship and support of our children, which is helping make our response to the pandemic possible.
Please keep our staff and children in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you,
