The Story of Keefer's Cabin

Back in 1978, my husband Ron and I were both teaching in Coeur d’Alene and expecting our first child. We were so excited to start a family! We were also excited to find 1st Pres where we were warmly greeted with a great message and many young families. That was 46 years ago.
Our two sons grew up in this church. Over the years Ron served on Session and I served as a Deacon. This church was a very important part of our family. Unfortunately, in April of 2019, while we were on a cruise to the Panama Canal, Ron became very sick. The plan was to take him to the hospital when we docked in Florida. Sadly, he passed away very suddenly on the ship before we reached Florida. Needless to say, his death was a shock to our family, neighbors, and church friends. Over the next few weeks, friends and family members shared their heartfelt sorrow in words and with generous contributions toward a memorial for Ron. It was then up to me, my sons, and our loving church to determine what that might be. As I mentioned, Ron and I were both elementary teachers. However, in the summer Ron had a little construction company where he would build playground equipment for homes and schools. Once we enlisted help from Carley Walker, our Director of Children & Family at the time, the perfect memorial was designed — a fort/play structure for the Children’s Adventure Zone. The Men’s Bible Study group, in which Ron was a member, volunteered to build and install the structure once completed. The rest is history. On Sunday, February 23, 2020, the Keefer Cabin (aptly named) was dedicated! What an amazing gift and loving tribute to Ron. It brings my family and me great joy to see children laughing and playing there each week. My heart will be forever grateful for this wonderful church family!
